Ingles closes two metro Atlanta grocery stores

(ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- Ingles Markets Inc. has closed two of its metro Atlanta stores.

Speaking to analysts on Aug. 4, Ron Freeman, chief financial officer of the North Carolina-based grocery chain, said the two Atlanta stores "didn’t meet our ongoing plans."

"They were old stores, smaller size, just didn’t fit into the long-term plan for us," he added.

Since the company owns the properties, it has some redevelopment options either to lease the space vacated or to sell the properties, he said.

One of the stores was located on Hugh Howell Road in Tucker, where it was sandwiched between a nearby Publix, Kroger and Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Ingles now operates 201 stores, including 71 in Georgia, 70 in North Carolina, 36 in South Carolina, 21 in Tennessee, two in Virginia and one in Alabama.

Back to school surprise: Weekend roadwork canceled

Back to school surprise: Weekend roadwork canceled

(WXIA) -- This weekend will be a holiday for Georgia families in more ways than one.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended construction-related lane closures on all major interstates and highways within five miles of malls and shopping districts.

This will allow parents and students to enjoy the tax-free shopping weekend without the added stress of road delays.

"The sales tax holiday is an opportunity for Georgians to save a little money during these challenging economic times," GDOT Commissioner Keith Golden said. "The department is glad to offer some relief from lane closures as families prepare for school."
