Public awareness training session “Snakes, Bugs, Insects, and Poisonous Plants in the DekalbParks”

DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis announces that DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will host the public awareness training session “Snakes, Bugs, Insects, and Poisonous Plants in the Parks” tomorrow, Sept. 15, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center, 3181 Rainbow Drive in Decatur.

As the public is invited to enjoy the county’s parks and natural resources, visitors should be aware of the harmful snakes, bugs, insects, and poisonous plants. The workshop will teach visitors proper identification techniques and inform attendees about state laws that protect certain animals and plants.

New courtroom to open at DeKalb Recorders Court

DECATUR, Ga. -- A brand new Recorders Court courtroom will open at the DeKalb County Recorders Court Wednesday morning.

The new courtroom came about in the creative inspiration of Chief Judge Nelly Withers and her executive team. The judge decided to convert a storage area into a courtroom to improve court capacity and reduce wait times.

Judge Withers, her family and courthouse employees painted the new courtroom in their free time, while a police officer with carpentry skills built the judge's bench while he was off-duty.

The courtroom will officially be unveiled at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Cases will be heard in the courtroom immediately, with full implementation underway by October. This additional courtroom will result in 25 percent extra capacity in Recorders Court.

DeKalb County Recorders Court is located at 3620 Camp Circle in Decatur.

DECATURThe Browns Mill Recreation Center is temporarily closed for a renovation project. It is anticipated that the renovations will be completed by December 2011. Participants are still encouraged to take part in the many amenities that are offered at the following nearby recreation centers:

Dekalb Parks and Rec committees to meet and discuss greenspace acquisitions

DECATUR – The DeKalb Parks Bond Advisory Committee and Initiative for a Green DeKalb Advisory Council will meet Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, 3787 Klondike Road in Lithonia.

There will be an update on greenspace acquisitions and current Parks and Recreation projects.

Dekalb --  Keep an eye out for dozens of police officers going into neighborhoods throughout DeKalb County bearing sweet treats on National Night Out.  Blue Bell Creameries and the DeKalb County Police Department have joined forces to supply cool, delicious Blue Bell Ice Cream treats to communities throughout the county celebrating National Night Out.

During National Night Out, residents throughout DeKalb County and across the nation are asked to lock their doors and spend the evening outside with neighbors, police, city officials, and firefighters.  Blue Bell Creameries is a proud community sponsor for this positive, national family focused event.

AUGUST 27th GET READY TO RIDE!!! 

The Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club is sponsoring and organizing this event for a fallen fellow friend and colleague who lost his battle with cancer May 28th, 2011.  He was a fomer MP, former Roswell Ga. Police Officer, and current Senior Federal Air Marshal.   The 1st Annual  BILL FITZGERALD MEMORIAL BENEFIT RIDE will start at 10am on Saturday August 27 at Six Ways 2 Sunday 1815 Hwy 138 Conyers, Ga.   Kickstands up at 11:30am  This is a Police escorted ride.  $20 per Bike, $30 Two Up
All proceeds will benefit the Fitzgerald Family.  

The ride will approximately be just over 100 miles round trip. North on Hwy. 138 to east bound I-20.  East on I-20 to exit 130 (Just past Lake Oconee).
