ADOPT A PET: Meet Brewster

ADOPT A PET: Meet Brewster

DECATUR, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half chewed shoe or overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a “companion” for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Brewster is a four-year-old Retriever mix and she’s available for adoption from the PAWS Atlanta, the DeKalb County Humane Society. Brewster would be considered full grown, so he probably won’t grow much. He’s long haired and red. Brewster came from a “dog hoarding situation in Alabama” and vets in Atlanta determined that he had suffered brain damage as a young puppy.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- For this week's edition of Best Spots, we have compiled a list of dog parks for you to take you furry friend for some fun.

Recently, dog parks have been sprouting up in the Atlanta area. With newly modified leash law restrictions, owners who may or may not have yards need a place for their dogs to run free and get adequate daily exercise.

Some say, these parks are becoming more popular as the country begins placing more of an emphasis on health following the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative.

Dog owners in the City of Decatur can take their furry children to the Oakhurst Dog Park an off-leash, permit only park. The park is approximately 2 acres and is partly wooded with a “grassy plain” area. Oakhurst is completely fenced. Regular park goers complain that one low-lying area in the park gets muddy after it rains but aside from that, the park is a neighborhood favorite.

Veterinarians Caution Pet Owners: Dangers at Easter Time

Veterinarians Caution Pet Owners: Dangers at Easter Time

Atlanta, GA --  (Submitted by Pet Poison Hotline) The veterinarians at Pet Poison Helpline, a national 24/7 animal poison control center, receive hundreds of calls this time of year from pet owners and veterinarians concerning cats that have ingested Easter lilies.

“Unbeknownst to many pet owners, Easter lilies are highly toxic to cats,” said Ahna Brutlag, DVM, assistant director at Pet Poison Helpline. “All parts of the Easter lily plant are poisonous – the petals, the leaves, the stem and even the pollen. Cats that ingest as few as one or two leaves, or even a small amount of pollen while grooming their fur, can suffer severe kidney failure.”
