Music for Missions Presents Mlle. Maria Valdes, a Soprano vocal Performance

Atlanta, GA--  United Methodist Church in Tucker will be showcasing Maria Valdes an exceptional Soprano at this years Music for Mission concert on December 12th at 7pm.  Maria Valdes is a third-year vocal performance major at Georgia State University and will present an outstanding selection of compositions for soprano.  Maria has travelled all over the world with her talents and this concert is being billed as her "homecoming" event.

Maria graduated from Kennesaw Mountain High School, received the Hoover Choral Scholarship at Georgia State University and is a University Scholar. She has sung in master classes with David Daniels, Harry Bickett, William Fred Scott, and Joe Rescigno.

The DeKalb County School System will host two Community Meetings RE: Superintendent Search Process

Atlanta, GA--  The DeKalb County School System will host two Community Meetings in December regarding the DeKalb County Board of Education Superintendent Search Process. The public is invited to attend both meetings. 

The Community Meetings will be held at the following locations: 

  • Peachtree Middle School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7 
  • Columbia High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9

The Board of Education is seeking a permanent superintendent for the DeKalb County School System.

DeKalb County Public Safety Officials and Business Community Partner to Combat Crime

Atlanta, GA--  (submitted by ehburton@dekalbcountyga.gov) Various DeKalb County public safety officials, county officials and local business leaders have partnered to create a "Crime & Coffee" workshop on December 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the Northlake Doubletree Hotel located at 4156 Lavista Road. The free hour-long workshop includes presentations from various public safety officials, a Q&A session and a complimentary continental breakfast.

DeKalb Citizens Continue to Reap Benefits from DA's Successful Lawyer Apprentice Program

Atlanta, GA--  The successful lawyer apprentice program begun more than a year ago by the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office continues to provide monetary and legal benefits to DeKalb County residents.

Last week six more apprentices -- who had been working at no cost to DeKalb County taxpayers and the District Attorney’s Office -- were sworn in as full members of the Georgia Bar. The apprentices are now authorized to perform any of the work conducted by any of the office’s full-time assistant district attorneys.

Stone Mountain Family is a Finalist in the Parenting Magazine Road Trip Contest, But Needs Your Vote

Atlanta, GA--  Parenting Magazine's annual Family Road Trip sweepstakes has a Stone Mountain family as one of its finalists!!! Between now and November 15th all of us in America have the chance to vote for the family we think should win an all-expense paid road trip through several states while blogging about their experiences on Parenting.com. 

The Edmunds family consists of Mom Kristin and Dad Tim, who are childhood sweethearts who grew up with great road trip memories. They are hoping that winning the Family Road Trip will give them the opportunity to take their 4 year-old Brooke and 2 year-old Lauren on a family trip that will give their daughters the same sort memories, and they could use our Local Hometwon help to send them on their way.

DeKalb County DA Office Moves to Temporary Location

Atlanta, GA--  The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office has moved and effective Monday, Nov. 1 will be temporarily located on the 4th and 5th floors of the new Judicial Tower. The address is 556 N. McDonough, Decatur, Georgia 30030. The office is moving so the space it occupied in the old courthouse building on floors 7 through 9 can be renovated. 

    District Attorney offices not located in the old courthouse building will remain where they are presently located. All phone numbers remain the same.

'Students Without Mothers' Charity Poker Tournament

Atlanta, GA--  In November, Students Without Mothers will host two events to raise funds supporting the organization's mission to provide college scholarships to high school students who have lost their mothers.  The First Annual Students Without Mothers "Beat the Odds" Poker Tournament will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m. at Smoke Rise Country Club in Stone Mountain.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. and cards fly at 7 p.m. If you're a beginner who wants to learn, be sure to get to the club in time for the lesson, which start at 6:30 p.m.

The Students Without Mothers "Beat the Odds" Poker Tournament is hosted by Reginald and Lynne Prime. Reginald Prime is the Board Chair for Students Without Mothers and Director of Environmental Affairs for Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. The press release for this event is attached for your reference.
