County Commissioners Vote Down building of a Controversial Crematory in a Tucker Neighborhood

Atlanta, GA-- (AP) Earlier this month, dozens of neighborhood residents cheered the Gwinnett County planning commission's rejection of the proposed crematory. The Bill Head Funeral Home applied for a special-use permit that would allow the business to construct a 436-square-foot incinerator that would sit about 100 feet from several homes and within a half-mile of 17 subdivisions.

Residents told the panel that they were concerned about the potential odor and that they feared a crematory would negatively affect their property values and emit toxins. Some experts have said such fears are unfounded.

The county's planning department has also recommended denial of the application.

DeKalb Rape Crisis Center Marks 20 Years

DEKALB COUNTY, GA -- The DeKalb Rape Crisis Center is marking 20 years of healing and helping victims of a devastating crime.

DRCC was founded in 1989 after the Junior League of DeKalb County raised the funds to hire a small staff and recruited a massive reserve of volunteers.

At the time, the only rape crisis center in the area was at Grady Memorial Hospital, which covered both DeKalb and Fulton counties.

"Grady often had more volume than they really needed to be handling," said former DeKalb County District Attorney Bob Wilson, now a founding partner of Wilson, Morton & Downs law firm. He served on DRCC's first Board of Directors. "Grady was stressed a lot of the time to meet the demand."

Today, DRCC meets a growing demand and provides a vital service to the community.

Wendy's Customers Help Lilburn Police Capture Three Armed Robbery Suspects

LILBURN, Ga. -- The good guys won this round.

Wednesday night at about 8:30, two men held up, at gunpoint, the Wendy's at Lawrenceville Highway and Beaver Ruin Road in Lilburn.

They had bandanas covering their faces.

One of the men pointed a revolver at one of the customers, Fidel Reyes -- pointing it right in his face.

Reyes is a Norcross auto mechanic; his wife and two small daughters, ages 8 months and two years, were with him in that Wendy's; and he couldn't believe what he was suddenly seeing and hearing.

The gunman shouted at him, "He said, 'Get down, because this is serious, we're serious, just get down, don't look up, don't look up.'"

The robbers also ordered the other customers to get down on the floor. In all, there were four adults and three children.

Reyes said, "I went down, and I grabbed my wife and my kids and I say, 'Just hold on, keep down, and keep praying, so everything should be no problem.'"

Watch North Gwinnett Play Mill Creek On Demand

HOSCHTON, GA -- The North Gwinnett-Mill Creek is going to be available on demand, courtesy of HighSchoolSports.net and USA TODAY.

North Gwinnett is one of Georgia's best football teams and as the season wears on, the Bulldogs only seem to get better.

Ranked as the 13th in the USA TODAY Super 25 national high school football poll, North Gwinnett has beaten some of the top teams from around the state and country.

Mill Creek is 3-4, but the Hawks are 13 points and a forfeit away from being 6-1 in one of 5A's toughest regions. In that forfeit, an academically-ineligible reserve played late in Mill Creek's 35-14 field win over Cherokee.
