Woman killed in DeKalb nursing home fire

TUCKER, Ga. -- One person is dead in a DeKalb County nursing home fire Tuesday morning. Two people were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The victim was identified late Tuesday morning as 64-year-old Laura Barrett.

The fire, which broke out at around 3 a.m., was reported to be in one room of the Meadow Brook Nursing Home located at 4608 Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker. DeKalb County fire officials said the blaze began when a nursing home resident smoked a cigarette in bed next to an oxygen tank.

Fire officials say 75 people were evacuated from the second floor. They were first brought outside and then when everything was clear, they were brought back inside and out of the cold.  About 120 residents live at the facility.

The fire was confined to one room, but there was smoke and water damage to other areas of the building.

According to Medicare.gov, the nursing home was cited for fire safety deficiencies in the past, but those issues were fixed by 2012. Fire officials said the staff did a great job getting the residents out of the building safely.
