Apartment fire moved so fast, building is a total loss

CLARKSTON, GA (WXIA) – Friday night, firefighters battled a blaze that moved so fast that crews, who were only minutes away and got there quickly, could not stop it from destroying an apartment complex.

And if it were not for the heroics of some children, the situation could have been much worse.

What we know now is that the hydrants on the property at Silver Oaks Apartments in Clarkston were not a usable pressure when fire crews arrived.

We cannot confirm that the problem was weather related, but that is the speculation, given the recent freezing temperatures.

By the time crews arrived, the building was an inferno and there was little water to be had, due to low water pressure.

Big water tankers were deployed at the scene as crews ran nearly a half-mile of hose from the street. Meanwhile, everyone got out of the building – 26 people in all – thanks, in part, to some quick-thinking kids.

The firehouse is only two minutes away – literally right next door.

When they got to the building, the walls were ready to collapse.

It is not clear at present what caused the fire, and what caused it to spread so quickly. That will be under investigation in the coming days.
