More than 2,000 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.

Beat the Badge 5K to support DeKalb Police

TUCKER, Ga. -- Chick-fil-A and DeKalb County Police have teamed up to host a 5K that raises money for the DeKalb Police Alliance.

The Beat the Badge 5K will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at DeKalb Police Headquarters in Tucker.

Registration and sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m., with the race scheduled to start at 9 a.m. A post-race celebration will feature food, music, prizes and vehicles from every police department in the county, including the bomb squad, the K-9 unit and the helicopter unit.

The race costs $25 for adults and $15 for runners ages 12 and under. Everyone who pre-registers will be guaranteed a T-shirt.

ATLANTA -- Northlake Mall shoppers now have a great new way of connecting kids to their community in fun and educational ways with the launch of the property’s Simon Kidgits Club on July 28. Simon Kidgits Club is a membership club that opens up a world of fun and discovery for children ages 2-10.  Northlake Mall is now part of a network of more than 100 Simon malls nationwide that have launched the Simon Kidgits Club program as a way of creating fun and educational experiences at the mall that children and their parents can enjoy together.

To launch the new club and introduce the fun of Simon Kidgits to neighbors and their families, Northlake Mall is hosting a Kidgits Launch Party on July 28 from 2-4 p.m. in Center Court. Join for an afternoon of fun including face painting, cupcake decorating, crafts, game and lots of prizes!

ATLANTA -- Enjoy a cool treat and help kids in need at the same time on Dairy Queen's Miracle Treat Day.
