Deadline approaching for DeKalb Summer Food Program, March 18th

TUCKER, Ga. – (submitted by DeKalb County) The deadline to apply for the Summer Food Program is on Friday, March 18th. In an ongoing effort to enhance the quality of life for DeKalb County youth, the DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department will host the Summer Food Service Program, May 31 - July 29.

Funding for the Summer Food Service Program is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which ensures children up to age 18 continue to have access to nutritious meals during the summer. The main goal is to ensure children are getting nutritious meals even though school is out.

Applications for the program can be picked up at Tucker Recreation Center, 4898 LaVista Road in Tucker, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. or online at www.dekalbcountyga.gov/parks.

ATLANTA -- The two-story WIZometer is on the 11Alive porch.

Our colossal WIZometer is saved for a select few Fridays -- the ones that mark the start of near-perfect weekends.

Friday and Saturday are both 11s on the WIZometer, with highs at or near 80 degrees. Sunday will be a 10, with a high of 72 and a low of 55.

Get outside this weekend, enjoy the beautiful weather and celebrate the beginning of spring!

All local Rita's locations will be giving away free Italian ice, and the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon will be off and running on Sunday, Mar.

DeKalb County's unemployment rate rises to 10.5 percent

ATLANTA – According to State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the metro Atlanta area increased to 10.4 percent in January, up three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 10.1 percent in December.

Previously, in 2010, the jobless rate in the metro Atlanta area was 10.7 percent. Unemployment in DeKalb County, currently, sits at 10.5 percent. The rate increased because of layoffs in manufacturing, construction and administrative and support services.

DeKalb County Police Department Central Records Office has new hours

TUCKER – The DeKalb County Police Department Central Records Office operation hours are being revised.  Beginning March 7, 2011 the general public will be able to pick up reports during the following days and time:

  •  Monday - Thursday:  9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00p.m.  (Closed daily from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.)

The office will remain closed to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  For more information please call Central Records Office at 770-724-7740.

Never too early to get ready for the annual Plant Swap and Share Event in April

Tucker, GA--  (submitted by the Tucker Historical Society)  The public is invited to bring a plant or two and then find a plant or two to take home - it's that easy! Plants are not for sale this is a free fun event, but donations are always welcome. We will also be featuring bird houses crafted by Grayson Mays.

There will be experienced and knowledgeable gardeners on hand to answer your gardening questions and of course we also are glad to talk about Tucker history too.
