WEEKEND EVENTS: Art-B-Que, Family Dig and Derby Day

DECATUR, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

The fourth annual Art-B-Que will be held, this weekend, in the Avondale Estates. This two day festival features food, music, art and fun. This year, acts include: Noot d’Noot, Nine Inch Neils, AM Gold, Mule and Skinner MacQueen. The festival is free of charge. The festival will be held at Railroad Art District, which is located at 2846 Franklin Street in Atlanta.

Fernbank Museum is holding a variety of special archaeology programming throughout May in celebration of Georgia Archaeology Month. On Saturday, May 7, the museum will hold “a family dig for archaeology-themed activities that focus on Native American crafts and technologies”. The dig is included in museum admission and is free to museum members. The dig will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

RUTLEDGE, Ga. – Who knew a state park, had so many attractions in such a small town? Who knew you could have big fun for little funds about 40 miles outside of the "big city"? The folks at Hard Labor State Park have figured out a way. Tucked away in quaint Rutledge, the park is best known for its golf course; however, it has many exciting attractions including a beach, boat rental, canoeing, pedal boating, campgrounds, a full stocked stable and 22 miles of equestrian trails.

The 18-hole-golf course is described as “beautiful and challenging” the green fee Monday-Thursday is $36, Friday it’s $46 and on weekends and holidays the fee is $45. The fee includes a golf cart. Call ahead for tee times.

Aside from golf, for families the parks biggest attraction is their lakeside beach. The “swimming beach” opens, next weekend, on May 14. The beach is free to park visitors who have already paid their $5 parking charge.

DECATUR, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features local Cinco de Mayo eats. Every Tuesday Where U Live will choose four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal, under $20.

At Los Loros Mexican Restaurant the fish tacos are “excellent” and the margaritas are “tasty”. This neighborhood restaurant is a favorite to people who live in the area. Guest favorites include fish tacos and the beef enchilada. The signature margarita is mixed with tequila and Gran Marnier, making it the menu highlight. Visit the restaurant for their Cino de Mayo celebration at 1248 Clairmont Road in Decatur.

The Monterrey Mexican Restaurant in Tucker is known for their Mega-Margaritas, great service and always fresh salsa. On Cinco de Mayo the restaurant will offer food and drink specials, however, nothing on the regular menu exceeds $15.

Join the people of Conyers for a bike ride through Olde Town Conyers. This 4.5 mile group ride is open to kids and adults on the historical streets of Conyers. This ride is held every fourth Sunday of every month. Meet at the railroad depot area at 4:00 p.m.

Check out the Divine Intervention exhibit of African Art and Religion at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University. This free exhibit is open daily and it showcases different masks and art, along with rituals observed in indigenous African religion.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center hosts their Tango Night on Friday, April 22. Learn to dance to tango by focusing on rhythm and movement. No partner is necessary and lessons, taught by a Tango expert, begin at 8:00 p.m. And around 9:30 p.m.

The Decatur-DeKalb Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women will host its annual Red, White & Sparkle Wine Tasting Benefit.  Set for Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Yorkshire Clubhouse (4328 Magnolia Path; Decatur, GA 30034), guests can expect a fun filled evening complete with great food, great wine selections and great company all benefitting an excellent cause. A sommelier (wine professional) will be onsite to facilitate a fun and educational wine sip.

Proceeds benefit The Legacy Program, a young women's mentoring and leadership institute designed to transform our young girls into tomorrow's community leaders.
