Keep DeKalb Beautiful Places First in Keep Georgia Beautiful Awards Program

Atlanta, GA--  Keep DeKalb Beautiful (KDB) brought home two first place awards from the Keep Georgia Beautiful Awards Luncheon for its continuous efforts to provide DeKalb County residents quality programs and environmental stewardship.  The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, through its Keep Georgia Beautiful Awards program, honored KDB with first place awards in the Community Improvement and overall best Affiliate Award categories.

The KGB awards program honors those whose ongoing efforts in community improvement, waste reduction, and/or litter prevention exemplify leadership in protecting Georgia’s environment.

The Community Improvement award recognizes efforts of any group to improve, beautify, and preserve the quality of life in their community.  This year, KDB received $10,000 to fund the “Give Back to Gro” community garden at DeKalb Memorial Park.  The project included reclamation of a parking lot and the planting of garden plots. To date, 50 families have benefited from the DeKalb Memorial Park Community Garden.  More than 200 pounds of produce was generated from the summer crops, and more than 35 pounds were donated to charity.  The Parkview Civic volunteers, Piney Grove Baptist Church and Plant A Row for the Hungry were recipients of the garden’s harvest.

The Keep Georgia Beautiful Affiliate Award honors Georgia’s Affiliates and recognizes their comprehensive work in litter prevention, community improvement, waste reduction, and how they sustainably leverage their program to improve the quality of life in their communities.  Keep DeKalb Beautiful placed first in population size 250,000 – above for its efforts to improve the quality of life for DeKalb citizens through educational programs, county services and community-oriented projects.
